On this day, the Jefferson Awards are handed out at the U.S. Supreme Court. The Jefferson Awards were begun in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Senator Robert Taft, Jr. to honor those Americans who have embodied the highest ideals and effected the highest achievements in the field of public service during the previous year. One winner receives the award in each of the first four categories, and five unsung heroes are selected in the last category. Those wishing to make nominations can write or call Mike Hyland, Exec.
